'Rend the Heavens'

This past weekend, my daughter and I attended @reverbyouthconf with the teens of @indyvineyardyouth

We arrived a bit late, but just in time to capture this quote at the start of the message by @keirstynworden. Setting a tone of reverence and expectation. So many had powerful encounters with the Holy Spirit, including my sweet girl on Saturday night.

"Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down,
that the mountains would tremble before you!
As when fire sets twigs ablaze
and causes water to boil,
come down to make your name known to your enemies
and cause the nations to quake before you!
For when you did awesome things that we did not expect,
you came down, and the mountains trembled before you.
Since ancient times no one has heard,
no ear has perceived,
no eye has seen any God besides you,
who acts on behalf of those who wait for him."

A small thumbnail/color demo from last term. The students were working on a concept for a National Parks poster. We discussed creating notans and why simplification of shapes and values matters. It's a concept that you constantly have to refer back to—it's always relevant.

This image is from Zion National Park. My wife and I visited it a couple of times when we were first married. We climbed with some very competent friends. We were adventurous... and extremely naive.

The last slides are from Pine Creek Canyon in 2008. The last rappel is 100ft. Joanna and I went down it simultaneously on 200ft of rope. Joanna's smile says it all—a mix of bravery and terror.

Evy and I finished up our LOTR trilogy marathon this weekend. We started it sometime over the end of winter break. I had to scrounge for the DVD player to play my old-school extended editions.

It was only recently that I learned the films are back in theaters... I feel like I've lost my geek card in this regard. I'd sure love to see them, but I don't know if I can do that stretch at once in this season of life.

We're still working through our fellowship art lineup, so hopefully this is semi-redemptive :-)

We’re off to the races for term 2. I nearly lost my voice yesterday; it’s going to have to toughen up again or I’m in trouble. Here’s a light material demo from the end of last fall. I showed them the master of it as done by @munoa13 munoa13 and then they had a chance to have a go at it themselves.

Spring term is starting up next week. A few image highlights from the fall—sharing some wonderful student efforts and highlighting some very special speakers who shared their stories.

There were so many moments I could see the Holy Spirit impacting our students. Times of hilarity, sadness, and abundant joy. Our veteran students really shepherded the incoming ones, and there was a lot of special bonding with our freshman cohort.

Looking forward to reconnecting soon.

The first half of the conversation focused on how we learn by studying and drawing from references. Slide two discusses more about how we create designs from it. Some light rendering and color ideas before we had to wrap things up.

I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

Copies of the SFV board game arrived sometime last week, and I'm reminded of this title that I worked on some years ago.

Tomorrow, we'll discuss in class how not every image we create is used when working in a commercial environment. Projects are heavily altered or even abandoned as development unfolds over time.

These tiles fell by the wayside through the course of licensing approvals and were never printed.

This one is M. Bison's classic stage, dating back to Street Fighter II. If memory serves, you used to be able to destroy those statues back in the day by throwing your opponent into them lol.

David Sheldon and his friend Rhett shared individual stories of difficulty and breakthrough as they each sought to dig a deep well of connection within their pursuit of a relationship with Jesus.

Each made a decision to commit a radical amount of time. Time is a highly valued possession, perhaps one of the most difficult to surrender.

In conversation, David revealed to me that his middle name is also Keith. We share the same name, first and middle, in a different order. David is also a retired illustrator. Such a fun and unexpected intersection.

Thank you guys for the gift of your stories.

David Sheldon and his friend Rhett shared individual stories of difficulty and breakthrough as they each sought to dig a deep well of connection within their pursuit of a relationship with Jesus.

Each made a decision to commit a radical amount of time. Time is a highly valued possession, perhaps one of the most difficult to surrender.

In conversation, David revealed to me that his middle name is also Keith. We share the same name, first and middle, in a different order. David is also a retired illustrator. Such a fun and unexpected intersection.

Snow Mech!

Heavily inspired by an old Xbox 360 game, Capcom's Lost Planet. My kids and I were playing it sometime last November.

Big robots, big weather, and REALLY big insects—they loved the over-the-top themes.

I worked on the strategy guide ages ago. Occasionally, we'd receive a copy of the game ourselves to take home. I pulled it out of the archives over a shared school break. I was proud of the interior of the book at the time... I don't dare share it now 😂

Celebrating 18 years with this gal. We're approaching a time when we've known each other longer than we haven't. We've enjoyed some amazing seasons and endured some tough ones as well. I'm thankful to do it with a friend.

We took this picture at Wynona Lake at the same location where we were married. It was beautiful to revisit the area for an alumnus' wedding. We're joined by three very special girls on the stage now.

An abandoned demo from last spring term - rescued just for fun.

Uses LEGO car pictures taken in class, added in photos of Tokyo at night, distorted, bashed, and painted until something comes together. The intent is to encourage alternative workflows. It can be a little overwhelming to make sense of all the fidelity you get in a photo—to much visual info. You have to simplify, cut, push, and pull until it works. It’s a bit chaotic, and I always feel a little out of control in the early stages.

An abandoned demo from last spring term - rescued just for fun.

Uses LEGO car pictures taken in class, added in photos of Tokyo at night, distorted, bashed, and painted until something comes together. The intent is to encourage alternative workflows. It can be a little overwhelming to make sense of all the fidelity you get in a photo—to much visual info. You have to simplify, cut, push, and pull until it works. It’s a bit chaotic, and I always feel a little out of control in the early stages.

It’s also an excuse to have my TA build one of the Lego Speed Champions cars 😆. They are sooo cool.

Found this quick demo, scrubbing through some old files from a past Animatics class. Not that anything is necessarily ‘quick’ in animation. For our curriculum, creating animatics is one step above our storyboarding/composition classes, but not necessarily a fully fledged animation. Many of our students push far beyond what we do in the classroom, though, once they understand their personal goals.

This was an attempt to describe the dolly zoom scene that the artists at Disney created in the animated classic “The Lion King.” It’s the moment when the stampede is headed towards Simba, and the camera pushes in, and the foreground and background elements scale. It’s so good, and a clinic in how they worked within the technology of the time by simply planning, scaling, and zooming. Worthy of referencing. There’s a really nicely produced YouTube video that unpacks the whole idea brilliantly.

“We didn't want to make a movie about a monument named Lincoln - we wanted to make a movie about a man named Lincoln.”

I am struck even as I share today, at how relevant and current are many aspects of his life and death, in the wake of current events.

My daughter Sylvia, made this AMAZING drawing from memory from this page of the Fuel Factory.

In truth, I didn't even realize what she was drawing when she was going after it. We were working on a how to draw video, so the book was on her mind, but this wasn't the activity and the book itself wasn't open. She was just doing her thing from recall.

I overlaid the two images as there were so many little details she got right! Great observation little one! I LOVE her big wave shapes.

As parents, we all put our kids artwork up all over our home; making sure to get this up on my virtual fridge as well :-)

Ohhhh wow, I just stumbled across these images searching for some items on my website.

These were from a card game "Dumpster Diver" published around 2016. One of the categories for items was board games, and I made a bunch of parody images or popular titles. I remember our team giggling as everyone was coming up game title names and image concepts. I still love how absurd they are!

With so many of the pages in this book, I’ve imagined what they would look like in motion. I told myself earlier this week I’d just take an afternoon, cut out some sections, and give them some motion. Should be quick.

wrong. WRONG.

Lots of relearning the software coupled with working out animating water. At first I just cut it out and tried to shift it around. It looked like a bad puppet show. I closed the laptop many times, ready to abandon it.

I think it landed in a good spot though. Still very primitive, but like the movement. And by the end I was laughing at myself making sound effects. A throwback to our animation class in Hartford. #yourbodythefuelfactory

I have discovered that the van is the ultimate member of the car collection. In our family, before my wife or I leaves we ask, "Are you taking the car... or the VAN?" The van is the prize of the fleet, packing seats for the entire family, without exception. I once heard a mechanic affectionately refer to them as ‘kid haulers.’

Should you yourself come into possession of a kid hauler, you will learn that your young passengers feel differently about your vehicle than you do. They attend to it, how shall we say, to a fair degree less than you. Of course, their job is also different than yours: Sit in the back and entertain yourself.

Oh, and they do.

At the end of June, we took a van trip to Colorado. We had a wonderful trip; worthy of a separate post once I’ve processed it all. A 16-17 hour van trip is not just a jaunt down the street. This is worthy of vehicle prep. Maintenance checks, mechanical repairs, and of course, cleaning it out.

As in, you have to go into the backseat.

Two images from last Sunday's continuing sermon series on Living Stones with @youth_pastor_nick .

Nick asked me to create some imagery while he shared about a special journaling technique he's been diligent in developing connected to Philippians 4:4–9

Image 1 was heavily inspired by a recent journey to Colorado, and some of our youth pastor's love of climbing. In a text to me, Nick mentioned his love of the grip and feeling of granite. When I was at the location depicted in the image, I thought about his message. I remember specifically grabbing some climbing holds on the rock and thinking about the feeling of the texture and the coolness of the rock.

The figure in the clouds is inspired by the Christ the Reeder statue in Brazil, another location our youth pastor has visited on a number of missional journeys.

Image 2 was during worship; our pastor Adam shared a passage that mentioned the Israelites crossing the Red Sea.

Image 3 for context of size and space.

I did a few digital edits for clarity and readability, but they are all created with charcoal materials on toned paper. These images are simultaneously fun and terrifying for me, as often go in blind and have to rely on the Lord for provision.
